Webinar 3: Equitable Distribution of COVID-19 Vaccines

Event Summary and Key Takeaways: 

Ensuring equitable delivery of COVID-19 vaccines has had many complexities, tasking leaders to face both hard decisions and to be creative in producing solutions. The continued ability to reach vulnerable populations as well as rebuilding the trust of those who are often underserved by the health care systems has brought forward some of the most pressing challenges. Fortunately, through data-driven, multi-stakeholder, and cross-sector approaches true innovation has emerged. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) led COVID-19 Vaccine Rapid Learning Initiative has served to identify and scale such innovations through peer-to-peer learning and change theory development.

In partnership with IHI, NRHI featured this learning initiative during our most recent Collaboratives In Action: Responding to COVID-19 webinar, focused on Equitable Distribution of COVID-19 Vaccines. Regional innovators shared their lessons-learned, examples of where they had supported increased equity and how they did so, as well as other key findings to date.

Here are just some of the noteworthy insights and learnings:

  • Partner with other organizations to access the data needed to support the community.
  • Be open and able to form new partnerships.
  • Leverage multi-generational voices in the community to reach others.
  • Hold community partners accountable to one another.
  • Aim for consistency in communications and sharing of data across partners supporting these efforts.
  • Don’t underestimate the ability of Federally Qualified Health Centers as a partner to reach vulnerable populations.
  • Build on your approach as you go, recognizing changes along the way.
  • Watch for unintended consequences of resulting from your strategies (e.g., vaccine prioritization by age range alone).
  • As the vaccination strategies evolve, access to more granular data is critical (e.g., census track data).
  • Geo-mapping data is essential with identifying and reaching vulnerable populations.
