Congress Ends Ban On Federal Funding For Needle Exchange Programs

More timely news for our behavioral health topic cycle. Needle exchange programs are pretty controversial but the research is really interesting. This was a major topic in Canada about 5 or 6 years ago in Vancouver to combat the city’s drug situation and they have been a pioneer in policymaking and research. The US is the only country in the world to ban the use of government money for NEPs and now the ban has been lifted.

KELLY MCEVERS, HOST: With the U.S. in the middle of an epidemic of heroin and prescription drug abuse, Congress just changed a policy that was in place for much of the last three decades. They effectively ended a ban on federal funding for needle exchanges.
