Blue Cross Plans Create Giant Database To Spur Cost Transparency
The nation’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans say they have accumulated a database of more than 2.3 billion medical procedures that will allow them to compare and measure healthcare costs and quality down to every zip code in the country.
Known as Blue Cross Blue Shield Axis, the data repository and web exchange platform is compiling 36 million provider records from all 36 Blue companies including Anthem WLP +% (ANTM) and Health Care Service Corp. It will “vastly expand” the volume of data Blue Cross plans have by January of next year to include 36 million provider records representing more than $350 billion in annual claims.
